Phonics Intervention Programme:

Intent: The Phonics Intervention Programme is designed to strengthen reading skills for learners who are not yet working at their expected reading age. It provides targeted support based on individual need:

  • Learners with a reading age 12 months or more below chronological age receive 1:1 intervention
  • Learners 6 months or more below receive small group intervention
  • All other learners access in-class phonics support and reinforcement

The overarching aim is to ensure all learners develop secure phonics knowledge & decoding skills, enabling them to become confident & fluent readers.

Implementation

The programme is delivered through a structured, cyclical approach:
1.  Assessment & Identification:

  • Baseline & diagnostic assessments using Twinkl phonics screening tools.
  • Ongoing teacher observations during lessons.
  • Input from parents and carers regarding reading behaviours & difficulties.

2.  Target Setting:

  • Individual learning plans identifying specific phonemes, graphemes, & high-frequency words
  • Short-term & long-term reading targets tailored to each learner

3. Intervention Planning:

  • Selection of appropriate Twinkl Phonics Intervention resources.
  • Allocation of learners to 1:1 or small group sessions based on need.
  • Regularly scheduled intervention sessions.

4.  Delivery of Intervention:

  • Structured teaching using Twinkl Phonics Intervention Packs.
  • Multisensory strategies including actions, songs, & memory aids.
  • Integrated reading and writing activities within each session.

5.  Monitoring & Evaluation:

  • Regular formative assessment to track progress.
  • Ongoing review & adjustment of intervention strategies.

6.  Communication & Collaboration:

  • Regular updates shared with parents and carers.
  • Guidance provided to support reading at home.
  • Collaboration between teaching staff & support teams.

7.  Review & Reflection:

  • End-of-cycle assessment to measure progress.
  • Evaluation of impact & effectiveness.
  • Identification of next steps for continued development.

Impact

The Phonics Intervention Programme is designed to have a significant positive impact on students’ reading abilities.
